Torrontes wine characteristics
Torrontes stands out for its pronounced aromatic quality, which can vary depending on the region and winemaking techniques. These lively white wines typically offer a bouquet of floral notes, such as jasmine, rose petals and orange blossoms. On the palate, Torrontés can range from medium to mouthwatering acidity levels, with light to medium body. Flavors often include ripe peaches, apricots, citrus zest, tropical fruits and occasional hints of herbal or spice notes. Torrontes white wine is usually dry or off-dry and can be compared to other aromatic grapes like Riesling, Muscat and Pinot Grigio.
Where is Torrontés from?
Torrontés is indigenous to Argentina and rarely found elsewhere. It thrives in the high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza, Salta, La Rioja and Cafayate, where bright sunshine and cool mountain air provide ideal conditions for the grape to flourish. The name Torrontes actually encompasses three different varieties: Torrontés Riojano (the most popular), Torrontés Sanjuanino and Torrontés Mendocino, all of which share similar characteristics, with Riojano being the most aromatic and flavorful.
Torrontes wine pairing
Torrontes' aromatic nature and acidity make it a versatile wine for food pairing. Its powerful fruit flavors and light body match well with spicy or tangy Asian cuisine, particularly Thai, Vietnamese or Indian-inspired dishes. It pairs well with fresh seafood, such as ceviche, sushi and shellfish, poultry dishes, vegetarian cuisine and soft cheeses. When searching for the perfect pairing, remember Argentine white wines always complement Argentine dishes. Serve a chilled glass of Torrontés alongside local favorites like fried empanadas or meat and corn-based Locro stew. Visit our Wine School to discover more hidden gems from wine regions worldwide.
