Sommeliers have to know a lot about wine. It’s part of their job to know what makes a good wine and what makes a great wine. The Sommeliers at the Sommelier’s Challenge wine competition lauded the first release from Whipstitch last year, and the 2014 Merlot follows in that luxurious tradition. This year they awarded the newest wine from Whipstitch a Silver! It’s a classic California wine, with full-bodied fruit and hints of clove and nutmeg that come from the new oak. Our experts call it a powerful combination for powerful palates. This wine will pair beautifully with red meats, barbecued or grilled. It also took home Silver at the 2018 Harvest Challenge!

Wine Region

California

California is one of the most diverse winegrowing regions in the world. Spanning 850 miles along North America's west coast—and inland across mountains and valleys—California's American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) cover a dizzying array of terroir. The cold, deep waters of the Pacific Ocean play a major role in cooling California's vineyards, sending fog and chilly air up to 100 miles inland. This tempers the daytime heat and allows grapes to ripen slowly but fully. Cooler-climate grape varieties thrive closest to the sea, while further inland, bigger, bolder wines prevail.
