About This Wine

Whale Light

Pinot Gris

The multi-award-winning winemakers at Whale Light have migrated to new lands to gather all the beauty and potential Washington terroir has to offer. This complex wine is crafted from fruit chosen from multiple vineyards around the state to showcase the characteristics of warm and cool climate Pinot Gris. Washington sits at one of the highest latitudes among the world's wine regions. At first glance, one may write it off as being too cold and wet to ripen grapes properly. However, the Cascade Mountains cast a large rain shadow that protects the state's renowned winegrowing regions from the downpours associated with its largest city, Seattle. This results in a short growing season but long daily sun exposure due to the state's northerly location. This, combined with an extensive diurnal range, makes the perfect home for our Pinot Gris. These grapes take advantage of ample sunlight, allowing them to develop their full spectrum of fruit flavors while cooler nighttime temperatures slow ripening and preserve the fruit's refreshing acidity. Wine Region

Columbia Valley

Sheltered by the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, Columbia Valley is home to the majority of Washington's vineyards. Cool nights keep zippy acidity in the grapes, while long daylight hours give the fruit plenty of chance to ripen. This results in full-bodied Merlot, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon and deeply concentrated Syrah. White wines are just as tantalizing, with toasty oak-touched Chardonnay and ripe stone fruit-flavored Riesling taking the spotlight. Sub-AVAs to look out for are Yakima Valley and Walla Walla. The Columbia Valley is one of the only appellations in the United States to occupy vineyards in two states, as it crosses the Oregon border in the southern part of the valley.
