About This Wine
Treaty 42 Cellars
Monastrell
Monastrell, or Mourvèdre as it’s more commonly known, is frequently used as a blending grape. Monastrell’s bold tannins and meaty, savory aromas are very distinct which make it an idyllic blending partner. However, when it’s seen on its own it is full-bodied, rustic, and perfect for lovers of deep-reds. The varietal originated in Spain but is now grown in many other locations around the world. It thrives in warm, dry environments which makes the hot, Mediterranean climate of its native Spain idyllic for growing. Monastrell’s berries are small and thick-skinned resulting in a deep color, concentrated flavors, and strong tannins. This wine is Old World through and through. It features bright red fruit and tart berry flavors that transition to a savory taste that melds with baking spice notes while the palate is coated by signature grippy, big tannins. This wine continues to open up as it’s sipped and is a perfect pair for smoked or barbecued meats. Try it slightly chilled too!
