About This Wine

Trailstone

Syrah

Flavors of concentrated fruit serve as the bedrock of our Trailstone Syrah. This exciting new release from the winery the New York International Wine Competition named "Columbia Valley Winery of the Year" is plump and fruit forward with rich sweetness driven by oak influence. The volcanic and sandy loam soils of the Columbia Valley AVA offer little access to water and nutrients. This means a vine must drive its roots deep into the earth to find nourishment. In doing so, the vine is forced to focus its energy on fewer grape clusters. Just as the most treacherous trails often end with the most astonishing views, these difficult conditions result in higher-quality fruit with superior flavor concentration. A skillful use of oak to age the wine softened tannins and added complex secondary notes. The result is a delicious testament to the nuances of Washington terroir and winemaking expertise. Trailstone 2018 Syrah Columbia Valley, Washington

Wine Region

Columbia Valley

Sheltered by the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, Columbia Valley is home to the majority of Washington's vineyards. Cool nights keep zippy acidity in the grapes, while long daylight hours give the fruit plenty of chance to ripen. This results in full-bodied Merlot, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon and deeply concentrated Syrah. White wines are just as tantalizing, with toasty oak-touched Chardonnay and ripe stone fruit-flavored Riesling taking the spotlight. Sub-AVAs to look out for are Yakima Valley and Walla Walla. The Columbia Valley is one of the only appellations in the United States to occupy vineyards in two states, as it crosses the Oregon border in the southern part of the valley.
