In the arid climate of Washington’s Yakima Valley, vineyards enjoy an average of 300 sun-filled days a year. This northern wine region sits at the same latitude as Merlot’s ancestral home in Bordeaux. However, unlike Bordeaux, Yakima Valley has little influence from the ocean thanks to the towering peaks of the Cascade Mountains to its west. These ridges block coastal storms, keeping inland regions dry and hot, resulting in a fuller, fruitier, New World styling.
