An award-winning white wine blend from master winemaker Javier Vela, Sirenia took home the silver medal at the 2017 Winemaker Challenge. After one sip, it’s easy to understand why: blending the rich aromatics of Viura with the fruitiness of Chardonnay, Sirenia 2015 exemplifies the ingenuity we love in Vela's unique white blends. Floral aromatics delight the senses, while tropical fruit and white tea flavors combine for a refreshing, yet powerful tasting experience.

WINEMAKER:

Since its founding in 1984, Bodegas Aragonesas has demonstrated an astounding mastery of both cultivation and winemaking. While still deemed a young and emerging operation in Spain’s Campo de Borja, where vineyards’ ages are frequently measured in centuries rather than years, Bodegas Aragonesas has grown rapidly to become the region’s largest wine estate. Much of this success belongs to winemaker Javier Vela, whose professional pedigree is tied to a long, familial lineage in the region’s traditions. Melding ancient knowledge with innovative techniques, Vela has succeeded in producing varietal blends that are distinctive, delicious, and incredibly drinkable, and Sirenia is an excellent demonstration of Vela’s mastery.

REGION:

Located near Spain’s northwest coast, Campo de Borja is famous for perfecting the art of Spanish winemaking, with monasteries tending vineyards since the 1100s. There are few places on Earth that can produce so wide a range of grape varietals as the Campo de Borja, famed for both red and white wines. Nestled in the Ebro River Valley, white wines such as Viura and Chardonnay that would ordinarily wilt in the region's harsh summers thrive thanks to the cooling winds coming down from the Moncayo mountain range.

TASTING NOTES:

Blending floral, crisp Viura grapes with acidic, fruity Chardonnay, Vela utilized stainless steel fermentation to successfully preserve the distinctiveness of the two varietals while melding them into a fresh, tropical whole. On the nose, fresh flowers abound, while in the mouth notes of ripe pineapple and apricot are balanced by lively acidity. This is the perfect wine for light lunches, evening aperitifs, or long, romantic, seaside dinners.

Wine Region

Spain

While its reputation as a serious wine destination was eclipsed by France and Italy for many years, ignoring Spain today means missing out on some of the world's most exciting wines. Enjoying hundreds of miles of sun-kissed coastline and rocky interiors at higher elevations, Spain provides an ideal location for vineyards. Whether it is sparkling cavas from Catalonia, crisp Verdejos from Rueda, sublime Tempranillos from Ribera del Duero or inky Monastrells from Valencia, Spain has many wine styles to explore, all expressing the country's wildly unique terroir.
