About This Wine

Rodney Strong

Chardonnay

The 2017 vintage will not be soon forgotten. The all-time precipitation record was set by mid-April as rain swept like waves over the North Coast, filling all lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. As the rain clouds subsided and the sun appeared, the vineyards in the Russian River Valley endured six different heat waves at or above 100°F, including a memorable one on Labor Day at 110°F. They harvested the fruit from August 30 through September 30. Barrel fermentation in new and seasoned French oak added toasty vanilla and spice complexities. During the twelve months of barrel aging, they regularly stirred the "lees" in the barrel, which imparts an elegant fullness and creamy texture on the palate.

Rodney Strong 2017 Chardonnay Chalk Hill, California

Wine Region

Chalk Hill

This sub-AVA in Sonoma's Russian River Valley sits on the western slopes of the Mayacamas Range. While the daily Pacific fogs that characterize the Russian River also blow through Chalk Hill, its wines differ. This is partly due to the ashy, quartzite-rich volcanic soils that give the region its name, and partly due to the slightly warmer climate. With vineyards planted on the valley floor as well as the soaring slopes, local winemakers have had success with a range of red and white grapes. Look out for intense Bordeaux blends, crisp Sauvignon Blanc and bold Sangiovese "Cal Italians."
