About This Wine

Red Schooner

Voyage 8 Malbec

The Wagner family has a distinct winemaking style that people worldwide love, and any wine that runs through Caymus will have a bit of the house touch. This Red Schooner Mendoza Malbec is no exception. They call it an "iron fist in a velvet glove." It has rich, fine tannins, a texture that mimics the dust in Mendoza. The character is refined, unique, and singular. It's unfined and already showing a bit of sediment in the bottle, which represents the rich and natural concentration that is abundant in this wine.

Made from grapes that are grown in the valleys that lie in the foothills of the Andes mountains and then shipped chilled to Napa Valley, where they are produced using the same techniques as Caymus Cabernet. This journey keeps it from following standard labeling rules, and instead of a vintage, it is known by the voyage that the grapes traveled to California.

Red Schooner NV Voyage 8 Malbec Mendoza, Argentina

Wine Region

Mendoza

Mendoza is the heart of Argentinian wine production. It was here where a previously little-known French grape variety called Malbec became a global superstar. With its extreme altitudes and Andean climate, Mendoza nurtures its vineyards in dramatic sun-drenched plateaus set against snow-capped peaks. At these elevations, the intense UV light ripens grapes in a unique way, working with the cold mountain air to create gloriously supple and expressive wines with bold yet brightly aromatic fruit. Mendoza's high-quality varietals from Bonarda, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are also notable, as are its fine Torrontés, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from sub-regions such as Maipú, Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley.

Tasting Notes

  • A figure representing the Leather tasting note. Leather
  • A figure representing the Smoke tasting note. Smoke
  • A figure representing the Plum tasting note. Plum

The Red Schooner Voyage 8 by Caymus opens a vibrant cherry red with a warm, alluring nose. Aromas of ripe plum mix with the rustic scents of the high desert – scrub brush, wild sage, saddle leather, the smokiness of a campfire, and a hint of pomace. The palate is silky and smooth, with lush plum and grippy tannins that touch the side of the tongue. An earthy character of leather and cooking over an open fire carries through to the long finish, whose fruit tapers off and yields to toasted wood.
