About This Wine

Paso Del Tiempo

Garnacha

The Paso Del Tiempo is a truly stand out wine. Not only did this wine take home the top medal, Double Gold, at the 2016 Harvest Challenge, it also was awarded the competition's two highest honors: Best of Class and Best Red. Not to mention, it's extremely versatile when pairing with food. We tried it with roast turkey, spicy Thai curry, pizza, and even chocolate cake—this wine seemed to bring out the flavor in everything. With bright red fruit flavors and just a hint of pepper, this powerful wine will dazzle you with every sip.

Part of what makes this wine special is the rare, high-quality of the grapes. Old vines grow less grapes, but those that they do produce get a larger share of the nutrients and sunlight than those from young vines. While the yield is lower, restraining the quantity that can be produced in any one batch, the quality than makes up for it. Old vine grapes have a lush, dense fruitfulness that grapes from younger vines can't compete with.

The other part of the story is Campo de Borja. Located near Spain’s northwest coast, the region is famous for perfecting the art of Spanish winemaking—especially Garnacha. The quintessential Spanish grape, Garnacha, or Grenache as English speakers call it, is one of the oldest varietals still cultivated worldwide—dating back nearly a thousand years to the Cistercian monks who first planted the grapes for communion wine. Since then, Spain has become world-famous for it’s Grenacha and the Campo de Borja region, in particular, has gained a reputation for producing some of the finest expressions of the grape.

The 2015 Paso Del Tiempo is bright ruby-red and concentrated with jammy raspberry and cherry aromas. The flavors have a well-balanced clarity and are spiced with just a hint of pepper. This fleshy, easygoing Garnacha offers a fruity, drinkable appeal and that pairs easily with almost any meal. One sip and you'll understand why, out of the thousands of wines submitted to the the 2016 Harvest Challenge, it was selected Best Red.

Wine Region

Spain

While its reputation as a serious wine destination was eclipsed by France and Italy for many years, ignoring Spain today means missing out on some of the world's most exciting wines. Enjoying hundreds of miles of sun-kissed coastline and rocky interiors at higher elevations, Spain provides an ideal location for vineyards. Whether it is sparkling cavas from Catalonia, crisp Verdejos from Rueda, sublime Tempranillos from Ribera del Duero or inky Monastrells from Valencia, Spain has many wine styles to explore, all expressing the country's wildly unique terroir.
