Imbuing the centuries-old traditions of Bergerac winemaking with a vibrant new energy, Oscar Darby is a fresh interpretation of classic French style. Crafted by Barb Spelletich, a winemaker renowned for her work in both France and Napa Valley, Oscar Darby is a fruit-forward Merlot-based blend that will add excitement to any meal or party.

WINEMAKER:

While Oscar Darby Rustic Red conveys the classic flavors of Bergerac Merlot, Barb Spelletich has taken advantage of the region’s other varietals to craft a blend that expresses a bright new approach. “Making wine is the same as cooking - you are looking for the balance, the nuances, and I predominantly focus on the smells and flavors,” explains Spelletich. “The wine must smell and taste like the fruit from which it is made.”

REGION:

A powerhouse of French winemaking since the thirteenth century, Bergerac’s limestone rich soil has allowed Merlot grapes to thrive in the area for hundreds of years. Located in the southwest corner of France along the River Dordogne, the area's excellent drainage and dry, warm summers are perfect for growing Merlot and Cabernet varietals.

TASTING NOTES:

Enlivened by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes, Oscar Darby’s fruit-forward flavors are introduced with an aromatic rich berry nose and a lush mid-palate texture. Oscar Darby is intended to be consumed in its youth (within 2 years of bottling), to maintain its energetic style.

Wine Region

France

While it was not the first country to master winemaking, no other country has determined the course of wine and wine culture as much as France. From the sparkling wines of Champagne to the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of Burgundy; from Bordeaux's sumptuous blends to Alsace's Riesling; and from the Loire Valley's Sauvignon Blancs to exciting new regions like Pays d'Oc in the south, France has given the world nearly all the major styles and grape varieties that dominate what we drink today. There are numerous reasons why France and wine are so inextricably linked, but perhaps the foremost is geography. Few places can rival France's unique array of hot and cool-climate regions and the abundant maritime influences and mountainous terrain found throughout the country.
