About This Wine

Open Secret

Sweet Style Sangiovese

“Best of Class” Open Secret continues to unveil occult treasures from around the globe. Our Sangiovese offers herbal aromas, ripe berry flavors and food-friendly textures, revealing everything we expect and love from this classic Italian red from a lesser-known location. Sangiovese is most commonly associated with Tuscany’s famous Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino wines. However, the sun-soaked island of Sicily has cultivated this ancient grape since the time of the Romans, as it offers an ideal home to this warmth-loving variety. Since the late 1950s, our local winemaking partners have been following in the footsteps of their ancestors, unlocking the best of Sicilian soils. Our 2020 vintage is born from the fruit of 25-year-old vines grown in sandy soils on the southwestern part of the island. This wine is just as nuanced and complex as its Tuscan neighbors, with a bright, fruit-forward aspect brought forth by the secrets of island life. Wine Region

Sicily / Sicilia

Even among Italy's diverse wine regions, Sicily offers something unique. Abundant sunshine, varied volcanic terroirs, cool coastal breezes and drying African winds make it a perfect place for growing vines. The island is home to many indigenous grape varieties, featuring reds such as Sangiovese, Nero d'Avola and Frappato, and popular white varieties including Vermentino, Catarratto and Zibibbo. As the largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily's position between Europe, Africa and the Levant has long made it a strategic location. The Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Normans and Arabs have all at various times controlled Sicily, and left their mark on its 4,000-year-old winemaking tradition.
