About This Wine

Klinker Brick Winery

Old Vine Zinfandel

This is the Klinker Brick flagship Zinfandel, and it's made from vineyard blocks with up to 120 years old vines. Classic techniques of barrel fermentation and a more judicious time on the grape skins provide a balanced structure to help counter this lush region. They pick early in the morning when temperatures are very mild. Each hand-picked Zinfandel block is hand sorted in the vineyard. Once at the winery, the grapes are de-stemmed, gently crushed, and put into tanks, where after a time, the wine is drained, and the skins are gently pressed. Each vineyard lot is kept separately in barrels for maturation. The resulting wine is lush and complex.

Klinker Brick Winery 2016 Old Vine Zinfandel Mokelumne River, Lodi California

Wine Region

Mokelumne River

The Mokelumne River appellation is tucked into southern Lodi in California's Central Valley. The region is home to nearly half of all winegrowing acreage in Lodi, most of which is Zinfandel. Some of the Zinfandel plantings are considered to be "old vine," indicating that they are some of the region's original vines and can be up to 50 years old. Broadly, Lodi is considered to be a hot Mediterranean climate, but the Mokelumne River appellation is actually the coolest during the growing season of all sub-appellations. Sandy loamy soils make the region uniquely special, and winemakers flock to grow beautiful wines in the area.

Tasting Notes

  • A figure representing the Cherry tasting note. Cherry

Delta breezes and the associated fog allow them to retain above average acidity for the region, providing notes of bright cherry and raspberry. Barrel fermentation brings additional structure to this thin skin varietal. The extremely low yields of century-old vineyards bring forth notes of sweet tobacco and cocoa. The result is a balanced and complex Zinfandel perfect for both Summer barbeques and Fall fire pits.
