About This Wine

John Calvin Esq.

Single Origin Chenin Blanc

Swartland, located just 40 miles north of Cape Town on the western side of South Africa, is a beautiful spot in the Southern Hemisphere that is spectacular for winegrowing, which boasts mostly older vines. Vineyards planted in a variety of locations, from steep mountain foothills or rolling valley floors and hillsides, receive coastal influences from the neighboring Atlantic Ocean. The hot and dry climate is idyllic as the drier conditions reduce the risk of disease and rot within the vines. Soils are well-drained but hold water deep within the ground, which forces fruit to work harder for nutrients. All of these factors lead to lower yields but highly concentrated flavors. This Chenin Blanc is a perfect expression of this region and harvest from these old vines. During harvest, grapes were picked very early in the morning in an effort to retain natural flavors. Fermented at no higher than 54 degrees, beautiful acidity came out during the aging process and complements a rounded tropical mouthfeel. White floral aromas jump out of the glass and make this wine incredibly easy-drinking. Scroll through the image carousel above to learn more about this wine.

Wine Region

Swartland

Swartland is one of South Africa's largest wine regions, famed for its mouthwatering Chenin Blancs, fragrant Syrahs and punchy Pinotage. Forty miles north of Cape Town, Swartland covers a large area from the Atlantic Ocean to the sun-kissed plains of Piketberg. The region has a hot, dry climate away from the cooling ocean, with ancient shale and granite-based soils. This forces the vines to work hard, producing small but concentrated grapes.
