Brune et Blonde Syrah

From one of the best wineries in France, this wine's name is a nod to the two areas of Côte-Rôtie, where fruit is used, the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde. Côte Rotie is situated in the northernmost region of the Rhône Valley. The Syrah vine is planted on steep terraced hillsides that catch and focus the sun's heat, giving the region its reputation and name: "roasted slope." The Côte Brune's soils are indeed darker, containing more iron and some clay, and the paler Côte Blonde soils have more sand and limestone and are the home of more Viognier plantings. This blend of 96% Syrah and 4% Viognier aged for 36 months in oak barrel.

One of France's most renowned appellations for Syrah, Côte-Rôtie—which translates as "roasted slope"—is the northernmost part of France's Rhône Valley. The name refers to the region's south-facing slopes, where vines enjoy all-day exposure to the sun and produce grapes with beautifully concentrated flavors. Only red wine is made here, typically from Syrah, and is full-bodied, densely fruity with a smoky complexity. While Côte-Rôtie only offers red wines, Syrah co-ferments with a small amount Viognier. This aromatic white grape helps bring a touch of floral freshness to the sun-soaked Syrah. AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) is the most prestigious of the quality tiers within France’s wine classification system. AOC-designated wines must follow multiple different rules on a broad range of topics. Wines are regulated on the appellation, varietal inclusion, production methods, alcohol levels, vineyard planting density and age of the vineyard.
