About This Wine

Faustino I

Gran Reserva Tempranillo

Aged and refined longer and only released when optimal. Tempranillo, Graciano, and Mazuelo, the three classic Rioja grape varieties. Graciano provides a very lively color and high acidity; Mazuelo flavor and abundant tannin, together with Tempranillo, are the perfect coup for long aging wines. True to Rioja, true to its origins. The resulting wine is cherry red developing to an intense ruby color. Well-integrated sweet and warm hints of ripe fruit, vanilla notes, and sensations of cinnamon, tobacco, and cocoa. Elegant in the mouth, structured with good acidity. The finish is sweet and surprising for a Rioja Gran Reserva. There is an aftertaste of the blend of very ripe fruit, vanilla, and roasted notes.

NOTE: This is NOT a Firstleaf Exclusive Wine.

Faustino I 2006 Gran Reserva Tempranillo Rioja DOC, Spain

Wine Region

Rioja

If you want to understand Spain, pour yourself a glass of Rioja. This historic northern region produces some of the country's most famous wines, typically mature, savory reds that go majestically with roast lamb. Rioja's vineyards trace the flow of the Ebro River through a valley protected by the nearby Cantabrian Mountains. Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano are the key red grapes, with Viura leading the white grapes. There are three main classifications of red wines: Gran Reserva (aged for five years, at least two in barrel), Reserva (aged for three years, one in barrel), and Crianza (aged for two years, one in barrel). Other wines can be young and unoaked—an increasingly popular style that shows off Rioja's modern face.
