About This Wine

Erste While

Gewurztraminer

California winemaking is experiencing an astounding period of innovation, from sustainable farming to the success of old-world varietals in the state’s unique climates. In that spirit, we're excited to bring you this Gewurztraminer, a European white that has found a new home at a 100% organic Mendocino winery. Erste While is the perfect introduction to Gewurztraminer, an aromatic variety filled with delicate floral notes of honeysuckle and rose petals while still maintaining the dry character that makes this wine so crisp and refreshing.

This unbelievable wine was awarded not only a gold medal, but was also voted Gewurztraminer of the year at the 2017 New York International Wine Competition!

Varietal: Gewurztraminer
Region: Mendocino, California
Winemakers: McFadden Vineyard
Alcohol By Volume: 13.3%
MSRP: $19.00

REGION:

Though the Potter Valley is a relative newcomer to the world of California wine, it’s superb grapes have left a lasting impression on the famed Mendocino County. The upland Potter Valley sits more than 200 feet higher than surrounding areas, with greater day-night temperature variation than any of the surrounding areas, making it perfect for growing white varietals like Gewurztraminer. The hot days ripen the grapes, while the cool nights preserve their acidity, resulting in fruit that retains a strong but refined character.

WINEMAKERS:

McFadden Vineyard, a member of California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), has produced multiple 90-point wines in recent years. McFadden Vineyard has been organic since its founding, assuring that at no time were any chemical fertilizers or pesticides ever used in the production of the grapes in their wines. They have specialized in varietals new to California, specifically their signature Gewurztraminer.

TASTING NOTES:

There is so much joy found in smelling this aromatic white wine that you can almost forget to take a sip. Lychee, rose blossoms and honeysuckle floral notes meet hints of white pepper and ginger, before giving way to the citrus flavors of tangerine and pink grapefruit. Even with these powerful flavors, Erste While remains dry and crisp, with beautiful texture and a crisp finish.

Wine Region

Mendocino County

One of the unsung regions of the North Coast, Mendocino County enjoys some of California's finest cool-climate terroirs. Lying north of Sonoma, it is home to 12 separate AVAs, spread through sleepy valleys and long, rugged coastlines—much of which exudes a rustic, laid-back feel. Mendocino delights fans of top-quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and sparkling wine, but there is also plenty of fine Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Syrah made in its warmer sites too. Mendocino is also famous for its high number of organic-certified vineyards, reflecting the general "off-grid" hippie nature of its winemaking pioneers.
