Devil's Advocate

Red Rhone Blend

Varietal: Rhône Red Blend
Alcohol By Volume: 14%
Winemaker: Joe Otos
MSRP: $22.00

Devil's Advocate was born from a challenging and intriguing question: Why can't a Rhone red blend be made from California grapes? When masterful winemaker Joe Otos posed us this idea, we knew he had to take him up on it, and the result is a 91-point Paso Robles blend that took the gold medal from the 2017 Winemaker Challenge International Wine Competition.

WINEMAKER:

Rhône wines, which have been produced in France’s famous Rhône Valley for over 2,000 years, are produced using a number of varietals that grow perfectly in California's lush, verdant soils. Joe Otos' knowledge of both French and California grapes and terroirs and his meticulous attention to detail enabled him to create this distinctively Paso Robles take on Rhone-styled red.

REGION:

Devil's Advocate is sourced exclusively from California’s world-renowned Paso Robles appellation. Joe started by tracking down three of the best-known Rhône valley varietals: Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre. These give the wine the silky, smooth tannins typical of a Rhône wine However, unlike a traditional Rhône wine, Joe blended these three grapes along with a hefty portion of Petite Sirah. This ripe, lush Petite Sirah, which makes up about 40% of the blend, provides a vibrant counterpoint to the traditional grapes, giving the wine a bold, fruit-forward flavor.

TASTING NOTES:

Devil's Advocate is a wine that truly merges together Old and New World styles of winemaking. In the nose, sweet fruit aromas stand out boldly, with red cherry, ripe plum, and roasted strawberries. In the mouth, layers of blueberry pie, cocoa powder, and exotic spice give the wine a lengthy and luxurious finish that will make you want to savor it down to the last drop.

Wine Region

Paso Robles

California's fastest-growing wine region is quickly gaining an international reputation for its innovative and boundary-breaking wines. Located halfway between LA and San Francisco, the Paso Robles AVA in San Luis Obispo County has two main zones. The eastern side has a hot and sunny climate with deep, rich soils producing plush, fruity wines with sweet ripe flavors. To the west, the cooling influence of the Pacific brings a zingy backbone to rich Zinfandel and Rhône favorites like Syrah and Viognier. Italian varietals like Sangiovese and Nebbiolo are also favorites of Paso Robles grape growers and wine drinkers.
