About This Wine

Calchas

Syrah

Our Calchas 2022 Syrah is a testament to Washington's Columbia Valley's resilient and adaptable nature. The 2022 growing season presented its fair share of challenges, with a Labor Day heatwave dividing the season into earlier and later picks. However, the vintners' meticulous care and attention to detail allowed the vines to flourish and produce high-quality fruit, albeit with lower yields. This wine showcases the effects of a warm summer and the impact of the heatwave on the ripening process. The season's warmth has contributed to the wine's rich, dark fruit notes. At the same time, the cooler periods preserved its acidity and freshness, giving it an overall well-balanced structure and intense flavor profile. Calchas 2022 Syrah is a perfect example of how challenging growing seasons can result in exceptional wines showcasing the best Columbia Valley offers. Wine Region

Columbia Valley

Sheltered by the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, Columbia Valley is home to the majority of Washington's vineyards. Cool nights keep zippy acidity in the grapes, while long daylight hours give the fruit plenty of chance to ripen. This results in full-bodied Merlot, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon and deeply concentrated Syrah. White wines are just as tantalizing, with toasty oak-touched Chardonnay and ripe stone fruit-flavored Riesling taking the spotlight. Sub-AVAs to look out for are Yakima Valley and Walla Walla. The Columbia Valley is one of the only appellations in the United States to occupy vineyards in two states, as it crosses the Oregon border in the southern part of the valley.
