About This Wine

Bodewell

Primitivo - Sangiovese

This exceptional wine is part of our Fine Wine Collection.

Winemaking Winemakers harvest Primitivo at peak ripeness to capture its naturally high sugar and plush, jammy fruit, then use gentle extraction to emphasize roundness over structure. Fermentation is warm and brief, locking in the grape’s rich, full-bodied character while softening tannins. Sangiovese is fermented separately at cooler temperatures to preserve its red cherry aromatics and savory lift, then blended in to add brightness, complexity, and a refined backbone to the wine.

Vintage The 2024 vintage in Puglia saw a long, sun-drenched season that allowed Primitivo to reach exceptional ripeness, concentrating sugars and intensifying flavor. Warm days and mild nights created ideal conditions for early flavor development, prompting a timely harvest to preserve balance. Sangiovese also benefited from steady warmth, ripening slowly enough to retain its hallmark freshness and lift. The combination of these two varietals reflects a vintage marked by generosity, structure, and a seamless integration of ripeness and restraint.

Pairing Logic This generous Primitivo–Sangiovese blend invites pairings with rich, rustic dishes like lamb ragu, charred eggplant, or herb-stuffed peppers. Its ripe dark fruit and baking spice notes complement hearty flavors, while the wine’s plush structure and subtle earthiness balance dishes seasoned with sage, fennel, or smoked paprika. For a refined touch, serve alongside creamy polenta or aged pecorino to highlight its soft oak finish and layered tannins.

Wine Region

Puglia

Puglia

The heel of Italy's "boot," sunny Puglia (the "g" is silent), is famed for its olive oils, almonds and of course, its rich, full-bodied wines. Although dry and intensely hot in the summer, Puglia has coastlines on three sides, providing cool Mediterranean breezes to alleviate the daytime heat. Primitivo (known in the US as Zinfandel) does well here, with other popular red varieties including Sangiovese and Negroamaro. But it is not all about reds in Puglia: the local Fiano grape produces gloriously nutty, tropical-flavored white, while Falanghina makes intensely fruity wines with citrus blossom notes.
