About This Wine

Bernardus

Chardonnay

This Monterey County Chardonnay is assembled from specially selected vineyards, primarily in the Arroyo Seco and Santa Lucia Highlands appellations. Each selected vineyard contributes unique aromas and flavors, creating a Chardonnay of extraordinary character and finesse. Bernardus follows traditional Burgundian methods to create a Chardonnay of the highest quality. At harvest, all of the grapes are handpicked after careful evaluation for ripeness. The grapes are then very gently pressed to obtain the highest quality juice. This is then transferred to small oak barrels for fermentation. All barrels undergo malolactic fermentation and are hand-stirred every two weeks until shortly before blending and bottling.

Bernardus 2017 Chardonnay Monterey County, California

Wine Region

Monterey County

Not to be confused with Monterey AVA, Monterey County is a larger designation that also includes the Carmel and San Antonio valleys, among others. Encompassing three distinct zones at the northern end of the Central Coast, Monterey County produces vast amounts of high-quality Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Gris. For reds, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon have often been replaced by Pinot Noir, Syrah and Grenache in recent years. These cooler-climate grapes achieve greatness through the influence of Monterey Bay, which pushes cold fogs and chilly afternoon winds down the Salinas Valley, tempering the sun's heat and allowing a long, moderate ripening season.
