Merlot

Merlot is illustrative of the influence of terroir on a grape variety. While some grapes consistently display red or black fruit flavors, Merlot may lean towards one or show characteristics of both, depending on where it is grown. Our Wyethia Flame Merlot from Lodi, California is distinctly red fruited. The inland wine regions of California tend to have high temperatures throughout the growing season due to the influence of the large mountain ranges that line the state's coast. These mountains block ocean breezes and other cooling effects of the sea. Lodi sits west of a large gap in this range caused by the San Francisco Bay, allowing for a cool, oceanic influence. This enables our Merlot to stay juicy and bright despite its inland setting. By doing so, Wyethia Flame has once again released an exquisite wine representative of the climate and terroir of California. Scroll through th ...

WINE REGION:

Outline of Lodi

Lodi

The jewel of the Central Valley, Lodi lies just east of the California Delta in an area of varied terroir. Winemakers here can extract different grape variety expressions from each plot of land. Zinfandel is common here, making deeply fruity and tantalizingly smoky wines, often from old vines. But the deep loamy soils and balmy Mediterranean climate, with its warm days and cool nights, help keep Lodi's grape varieties and winemaking styles impressively diverse. Alongside the ubiquitous Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Viognier also thrive. Lodi is a melting pot of different grape varieties and winemaking techniques, all of which make it a rewarding region to explore.

ABOUT THE BRAND:

Wyethia Flame

Wyethia Flame is rooted in the history and terroir of Lodi, California. The Wyethia flower shares this region's picturesque landscape with its state flower, the poppy, blooming in the sunny vales and floodplains between gently rolling hills. The "flame" refers to the traditional cultivation of Flame Tokay grapes introduced to the region in the 1900s, which for years supported Lodi's agricultural industry and were a common sight in nearly all its vineyards. Nowadays, this forgotten grape only exists in far-away corners of the region, replaced by European varieties better suited for winemaking. Our wines epitomize Lodi's terroir by respecting the rich history of native flora and cultivated crops, which helped shape the flourishing wine region it is known as today.
