ABOUT THIS WINE:

Serpenspine

Plavac Mali

Literally translated as “small blue”, the lesser-known Plavac Mali grape should be the stuff of legend. Born from long summers in the southern Balkans, this sun-loving grape produces a balanced, rustic red reminiscent of a bygone era. You can almost taste the region’s rich, unbridled history in every sip—a collision of cultures, ideas, and flavors from across Eastern Europe. On the palate, you can pick up redcurrant, strawberry, and plum with more subtle notes of rose and lavender. And it’s impossible not to notice similarities with your favorite Zinfandel. Crack open on cold nights with a big portion of boeuf bourguignon. Judges love it too! It took home a Silver medal at the 2019 Harvest Challenge.

WINE REGION:

Outline of North Macedonia

North Macedonia

Much like its southern neighbor, Greece, North Macedonia boasts a long grape growing and winemaking history, not to mention a host of exciting grape varieties. North Macedonia is regaining some of its pre-Soviet era glory through increasingly impressive (and great value) wines. There are rounded, flavorful whites made from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc and the indigenous Žilavka, Temjanika and Smederevka grapes. But ultimately, this is red wine country, led by the bold Vranec and vibrant Stanušina varieties, which make complex, fruit-forward wines alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Syrah.

TASTING NOTES:

Strawberry

Plum

Rose Petal

Young Vranec wines have a bright purple hue and a nose full of red berries and fruit jams. Its firm tannin structure provides crispness and richness. However, this has seen a little aging and has developed a more complex aroma that can include hints of cinnamon, chocolate, olive tapenade, flowers, and herbs. Perfect for pairing with slow-cooked meats and roasted vegetables.
