Southing refers to the south-facing hillside bluffs on the estate vineyard, and it is the second most searched for wine by Wine-Searcher users among all wines from Santa Barbara County. Sitting on the west side of Highway 101, Pacific winds blow dense fog into the narrow valley and drastically lower its temperatures. With steep, rocky slopes on either side of the river, this cool climate area is perfectly suited to producing fine Pinot Noir. You can also find stellar examples of Chardonnay and Syrah in the Santa Rita Hills. The local Santa Rita Hills Wine Alliance throws a three-day festival each year to commemorate the movie "Sideways," part of which was filmed here.

In 1999, fulfilling a long-held dream of owner Bob Davids, this sought-after stretch of land became Sea Smoke Vineyard. At Sea Smoke, they produce Pinot Noir grown exclusively on the south-facing hillsides of their estate vineyards.
