Our Schema Vermentino is crisp and fruit-forward with perfumed floral aromas and tropical notes. This cheerful wine comes from the scenic island of Sicily, where the locals have been making wine for thousands of years. It is amazing to think that the sun-soaked hillsides where vines thrive today are the same slopes that produced wine when Caesar ruled Rome. This history is possible not only because of the country's love of wine but also due to the remarkable influence of the Mediterranean Sea. Its balance of sun and sea breezes provides such a perfect climate for viticulture that we use the word 'Mediterranean' to describe any climate similar to this found elsewhere in the world. Italy's Terre Siciliane covers wines made across the island of Sicily—including its satellite islands of Salina, Pantelleria and Stromboli. The wines can be still or sparkling, red, white or rosé, dry or sweet, and made from such grape varieties as Sangiovese, Catarratto and Vermentino. Whatever the style, Terre Siciliane wines benefit from the natural features of this southern Italian region. Sicily's abundant sunshine, mineral-rich soils, coastal breezes and drying African winds help it produce exceptional grapes that transfer into wines of character and expression. The IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) classification system was created to provide more freedom and ease for winemaking within Italy. Wines under the IGT classification are regulated on the region of origin—where within the country grapes are grown—instead of varietals or wine styles as DOC and DOCG laws focus on.
