ABOUT THIS WINE:

Qupé

Qupé

Syrah

Qupé sources Syrah from various vineyards on the Central Coast, starting as far south as the Santa Ynez Valley up to the Adelaida District in northern Paso Robles. Throughout summer and early fall, daytime temperatures leading up to this harvest were mild—promoting the slow, even ripening of deeply concentrated fruit. Yields were average in 2018, producing a well-rounded vintage characterized by deep color, balance, and expressive fruit flavors. Fruit for this Syrah aged for 16 months in Burgundy barrels. With an echo of the Northern Rhône, it shows grip, grit, graphite, and bite that true Syrah lovers seek out.

Due to state registrations, we cannot ship this wine to AL, AZ, CO, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MD, ME, MI, MO, NJ, NV, NY, OH, PA, SD, TX, VT, WA.

WINE REGION:

Outline of Central Coast

Central Coast

California's Central Coast might be a bit quieter than Napa or Sonoma to the north, but this lesser-known region produces many world-class wines. Enjoying incredible terroir along its vast 280-mile stretch—from San Francisco Bay to Santa Barbara—Central Coast wines are increasingly in demand. Its position between the Pacific Coast Ranges and the Southern Coast Ranges is key to its quality, with many cool-climate AVAs offering elegant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Merlot. In the hotter parts of the Central Coast, away from the coastal fogs and cold mountain slopes, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre are exceptional.

ABOUT THE BRAND:

large bunches of red grapes on the vine

Qupé

The name "Qupé" was chosen to honor the Chumash, the indigenous people of the Golden State's Central Coast and Channel Islands. In Chumash, "qupé" refers to the poppy, a flowering plant traditionally used for food and medicine. In contrast to the Old World, Qupé focuses on cool-climate expressions of Rhône varietals due to a distinctive geographical feature that sets them apart from most other regions of California. The benefit to the vineyards of being along the coast and running East-West is that the cold, moist air gets pulled in and creates a layer of morning cloud cover over the vines, which reduces temperatures and sun exposure on the grapes. This is why cool-climate varieties excel in the regions of the Central Coast and allow Qupé to focus on cool-climate expressions of Rhône varietals.
