ABOUT THIS WINE:

Penrose Hill

Red Blend

The first Merlot that came to Firstleaf from Penrose Hill was an absolute stunner. It was awarded medals at five different competitions and was even given a Double Gold and the title of “Washington State Merlot Winery of the Year.” They are back with a beautifully sourced Red Blend from vineyards in California. Half of the grapes in this blend come from Lake County, a beautiful growing region just north of Napa (and it's one of our favorite places to seek out vineyards that are still under the radar). This Red is complex and has a beautiful inky color. Our experts have even gone as far as to call this blend “opulent” saying that the red and dark fruits are firm, full-bodied, and will stand up to any rich or intense foods. The spicy characteristics in the wine will pair especially well with red meats. Judges love it too! It took home 91 points and a Gold medal at the 2018 Sommelier Cha ...

WINE REGION:

Outline of California

California

California is one of the most diverse winegrowing regions in the world. Spanning 850 miles along North America's west coast—and inland across mountains and valleys—California's American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) cover a dizzying array of terroir. The cold, deep waters of the Pacific Ocean play a major role in cooling California's vineyards, sending fog and chilly air up to 100 miles inland. This tempers the daytime heat and allows grapes to ripen slowly but fully. Cooler-climate grape varieties thrive closest to the sea, while further inland, bigger, bolder wines prevail.

TASTING NOTES:

Raspberry

Black Cherry

Oak

The Penrose Hill Red Blend is a beautiful mix of dark fruits. We love it for the pops of black cherry and raspberry that play off of the firm tannins. With a wine this structured we find that pairing with flavorful meats to be the best option.
