Ophidian
Piekenierskloof, South Africa
Four-time Gold Medal-winning Ophidian strikes again with a refreshing new release
ABOUT THIS WINE:
Ophidian
Rosé of Grenache
Our Rosé of Grenache is light and lean with candy-like aromas and a dry palate packed with citrus and stone fruit flavors. This exciting new release joins Ophidian’s highly awarded collection of captivating wines. Rows of grapevines glide over the rolling hills and mountains of Piekenierskloof, South Africa. This small region is home to some of the oldest vines in the Western Cape, and Grenache thrives in its warm climate. Like the cold-blooded serpent on our label, these grapes spend their days basking in the sun. Come nightfall, temperatures drop, which puts ripening on pause until the sun returns in the morning. Grenache is an inherently fruity grape variety with thin skins and large, plump berries. This makes it ideally suited to rosé. Our 2021 release is a smooth and refreshing example of this style that will captivate your senses and charm your palate. Scroll through the imag ...

WINE REGION:
Piekenierskloof
Piekenierskloof is a relatively small area at the southern end of the Olifants River region, 100 miles north of Cape Town. This winegrowing region is earning recognition for its high-elevation wines. In fact, Piekenierskloof now boasts some of South Africa's highest vineyards as winemakers continue to explore the Citrusdal Valley's mountainside terroirs. Lying at the base of the Cederberg Mountains, this fertile valley was known historically for its citrus production. But oranges and lemons are slowly giving way to hillside vineyards planted with Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz grapes.

Seductive aromas of candied watermelon may fool you into thinking this wine will be sweet. However you’ll discover a dry rosé with enticing mineral textures, sharp acidity, and ripe strawberry and peach flavors. Serve well chilled alongside a platter of fresh fruit and soft cheeses.
