Ophidian
South Africa
A grape like no other: taste the unique aromas of Pinotage in this 95 Point, Double Gold medal release from Ophidian
ABOUT THIS WINE:
Ophidian
Pinotage
Dark plums, blackberry, and deep flavors of midwinter dance in a glass of Pinotage. One of the younger varietals around (closing in on 100 years), this South African original can showcase aromas that aren’t found in any other grape. Outside of dark fruits, it’s famous for having pleasant hints of smoke and sweetness that play beautifully off of one another. The Ophidian Pinotage is one of the great examples of what this under-the-radar grape can taste like, and we love it for its bold style and nuanced characteristics. The mix of dark and tropical fruits, the sweet smoke flavors, and undertones of herbs play beautifully with food. It’s the kind of wine that can stand up to rich and spicy meats right off the grill. Judges love it too. It took home 95 Points and a Double Gold Medal at the 2019 International Eastern Wine Competition!

WINE REGION:
South Africa
With its mountainous, maritime-influenced winegrowing regions, South Africa produces top-quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc and premium Syrah, Pinotage, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The Dutch brought vines here back in the 1600s to satiate their thirsty sailors en route to India, but they probably never imagined just how important to the wine world South Africa would one day become. Indeed, it took centuries for South Africa to discover its full potential. Most of the country's winegrowing areas thrive in the southwest, known as the Western Cape. Its most famous regions are an easy drive from Cape Town and include Stellenbosch, Swartland, Breedekloof and Franschhoek.
