WINE REGION:

Outline of Santa Lucia Highlands

Santa Lucia Highlands

Nestled in the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains, this small but mighty area was recognized for the quality of its terroir and became an AVA in 1991. Cooled by Pacific Ocean fogs and strong Monterey Bay coastal breezes, the sunny vineyards here enjoy one of the longest growing seasons in the region. Some regard its powerful Pinot Noir and deeply flavored Chardonnay as among the best California has to offer. And if you want to look beyond classic Burgundy grapes, try Santa Lucia Highland's intriguing Northern Rhône-inspired Syrah.

ABOUT THE BRAND:

Mer Soleil

FROM THE WINERY: Mer Soleil is a California wine estate that was established in 1988 in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA in Monterey County by the Wagner family of Caymus fame. It is known for its wines made from Chardonnay in a variety of different expressions. The cooling effects of the sea mean that there is a slow ripening period and a later harvest, which means that the grapes can retain acidity as they ripen, which leads to balanced, complex wines.
