Barbera

Named after innovative Italian painter Caravaggio, this wine combines tradition with nuance with one of Italy’s most hearty and versatile red grapes - the Barbera varietal. With low tannins and plush mouthfeel, Caravaggio is delicate and easy to drink, yet sensual and luxurious. You may detect fruit notes of dried cherry, pomegranate, and raspberry with hints of rose and white pepper. Starchy vegetables, braised greens, red meats, and stews are perfect for pairing, along with starters of hard cheeses and charcuterie, or, enjoy a glass on its own. Regardless of how you pair, you’ll experience creativity and craft in every pour.

WINE REGION:

Outline of Provincia di Pavia IGT

Provincia di Pavia IGT

The Province of Pavia is part of the pretty Lombardy plain in northwestern Italy, lying south of Milan and east of Piedmont. Without any famous wines to its name, it is something of an unsung area, but worth exploring as wine quality can be very high. As befits the area's long and rich history, there is a diversity of grape varieties and wine styles, including sweet whites and sparkling reds. Red grapes are principally Pinot Nero/Noir, Sangiovese, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, while whites are Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanco, Chardonnay, Muscat and Riesling. The IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) classification system was created to provide more freedom and ease for winemaking within Italy. Wines under the IGT classification are regulated on the region of origin—where within the country grapes are grown—instead of varietals or wine styles as DOC and DOCG laws focus on.
