ABOUT THIS WINE:

Marqués de Murrieta

Marqués de Murrieta

Limited Edition Gran Reserva

This is a 94 point blockbuster Gran Reserva from some of the best vineyards in Rioja. The blend is a little different from previous vintages if you have ever been fortunate enough to try them. There's a bit more Graciano and Garnacha in this wine than other iterations. The Tempranillo is a bit softened by the larger inclusion of the other grapes, but that being said the amount of time that it spends aging still packs a bit of punch. Dark fruit flavors and oak play off of one another in this delicious Spanish wine.

NOTE: This is NOT a Firstleaf Exclusive Wine and is not eligible for discounts, member pricing, or member guarantee. Limited Availability.

Due to state registrations, we cannot ship this wine to AL, AZ, CO, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MD, ME, MI, MO, NJ, NV, NY, OH, PA, SD, TX, VT, WA.

WINE REGION:

Outline of Rioja

Rioja

If you want to understand Spain, pour yourself a glass of Rioja. This historic northern region produces some of the country's most famous wines, typically mature, savory reds that go majestically with roast lamb. Rioja's vineyards trace the flow of the Ebro River through a valley protected by the nearby Cantabrian Mountains. Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano are the key red grapes, with Viura leading the white grapes. There are three main classifications of red wines: Gran Reserva (aged for five years, at least two in barrel), Reserva (aged for three years, one in barrel), and Crianza (aged for two years, one in barrel). Other wines can be young and unoaked—an increasingly popular style that shows off Rioja's modern face.

Marqués de Murrieta

The story of the Marqués de Murrieta winery is inextricably intertwined with the history of Rioja wine. The winery’s founder, the Marqués de Murrieta, imported production techniques into Spain from Bordeaux. In 1852 he produced his first wine in Logroño, moving into the Ygay Estate in the late 1870s. Located at the heart of La Rioja, the estate is home to Ygay Castle, headquarters of the Marqués de Murrieta wineries. The castle is surrounded by 300 hectares of vineyards. In 1983 Cebrián-Sagarriga family took up the mantle, commencing in 2007 meticulous restoration work on Ygay Castle, which was finished in 2014, the year the winery reopened its doors.
