This allows grapes to ripen well into March and April—which is harvest time in the Southern Hemisphere. Swartland is one of South Africa's largest wine regions, famed for its mouthwatering Chenin Blancs, fragrant Syrahs and punchy Pinotage. Forty miles north of Cape Town, Swartland covers a large area from the Atlantic Ocean to the sun-kissed plains of Piketberg. The region has a hot, dry climate away from the cooling ocean, with ancient shale and granite-based soils. This forces the vines to work hard, producing small but concentrated grapes.
