ABOUT THIS WINE:

Franz Keller

Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir)

German Pinot Noir, known there as Spätburgunder, is criminally under-appreciated. This wine is from the German region Kaiserstuhl, which lies in the wine region of Baden. The producer of this wine is the authentic winery, Franz Keller. Keller is a specialist in 'Burgundersorten,' so the Pinots and Chardonnay. These wines mature in their best barrels, and all have a unique character, potential, and finesse — truly unique grand crus! Coming from the Eichberg vineyard, a plot located in the bottom half of this vineyard was planted in 1994 by Fritz Keller using only Pinot Noir clones from Burgundy. The dark volcanic soil leads to a distinctive, rather masculine Pinot Noir that is powerful and animated.

NOTE: This is NOT a Firstleaf Exclusive Wine and is not eligible for discounts, member pricing, or member guarantee. Limited Availability.

WINE REGION:

Outline of Baden/Kaiserstuhl

Baden/Kaiserstuhl

Known as "the home of three Pinots," Kaisterstuhl in Germany's Baden region is highly regarded for the quality of its Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder) and Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder) wines. Nestled in the foothills of the volcanic hills that sit right on the French border, the area benefits from one of Germany's warmest climates. Its temperatures are rivaled only by Pfalz, which lies just across the Rhine River. Kaiserstuhl's Mediterranean warmth helps grapes here gain ripe, rich flavors. The result? Some of Germany's most powerful and full-bodied red and white wines.

TASTING NOTES:

Redcurrant

Oak

Cherry

Oak is present, but pleasant at the moment, despite its youth. Powerful wine with fine tannins and a long, concentrated finish. Can be stored for quite a few more years, which will make this powerhouse even more beautiful.

ABOUT THE BRAND:

large bunches of red grapes on the vine

Franz Keller

For decades, wine-growing estate senior Franz Keller set accents as a feared opponent of the major land consolidation in 1971, in his pioneering role in the introduction of the Pinot Gris, as well as a promoter of barrel aging and fully fermented dry wines. Today the company is run by Fritz Keller and his son Friedrich Keller. Cultivating expressive Burgundy varietals and nurturing small, historically important vineyards and vineyards with steep slopes was spurred by Franz Keller Sr. who already fought for their preservation in the 1960s. Their winemaking approach has been inspired by the wines and the “savoir vivre” of their French neighbors. Since the beginning, it has been their goal to make wines that are the perfect accompaniment for good food. Their name stands for dry, refreshing, and fruit-forward as well as complex, mineral-driven, and powerful wines.
