Francis Ford Coppola

Claret Red Blend

Claret is a term initially coined by the British to describe Cabernet-based wines. This Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc blend is alluring and sophisticated; it is memorably lush with a tapestry of smooth tannins and succulent flavors of wild berries, plum, and anise. Borrowing tradition of European wineries, we add gold netting to the bottle to signify the outstanding quality of the wine. Dark and luscious, 2016 Diamond Collection Claret delivers rich extraction, fragrant spice notes, supple tannins, and sophisticated character. The extended growing season produced highly concentrated fruit that’s enhanced by a full body and long finish.

WINE REGION:

Outline of California

California

California is one of the most diverse winegrowing regions in the world. Spanning 850 miles along North America's west coast—and inland across mountains and valleys—California's American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) cover a dizzying array of terroir. The cold, deep waters of the Pacific Ocean play a major role in cooling California's vineyards, sending fog and chilly air up to 100 miles inland. This tempers the daytime heat and allows grapes to ripen slowly but fully. Cooler-climate grape varieties thrive closest to the sea, while further inland, bigger, bolder wines prevail.

ABOUT THE BRAND:

large bunches of red grapes on the vine

Francis Ford Coppola

FROM THE WINERY: Winemaking has been a Coppola family tradition for several generations. Agostino Coppola, Francis Coppola's grandfather, used to make wine in the basement of his New York apartment building using concrete vats he constructed himself. The wines that Francis Coppola makes today aren't the same as those Agostino made, but they are produced in the same spirit—for sharing with friends and family. Over 35 years ago, when Francis and Eleanor Coppola and their kids were living in San Francisco, the family began looking for a small cottage in Napa Valley that they could use as a weekend retreat where they could make a little homemade wine. The family cottage they found turned out to be the great Niebaum Mansion in Rutherford, on the famed Inglenook Estate. Suddenly, the prospect of restoring that legendary property sounded far more exciting than making a little bit of wine in the basement. Once they had successfully accomplished the estate's restoration—a 30-year endeavor—the Coppola family decided to build a new winery in Sonoma County so that at long last, they could create a home for their ever-popular Diamond Collection and Rosso & Bianco wine brands.
