Merlot

East of Seattle and its rainy reputation, the Cascade mountain range gives way to Columbia Valley, the center of Washington State’s winemaking world. Its geographical location translates into more hours of sunshine—almost two hours more per day at the height of vine growing season. Unlike the wet west coast, desert conditions prevail, and the careful and precise irrigation of the vines is an integral part of the farming here. The cool nights allow the vines to rest from the daytime sunlight and help the grapes retain their acidity, one of the key elements of a well-structured wine. Bordeaux’s Merlot grape is right at home in these sandy soils, and its ability to thrive in the Columbia Valley helps produce an exceptional wine.

WINE REGION:

Columbia Valley

Sheltered by the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, Columbia Valley is home to the majority of Washington's vineyards. Cool nights keep zippy acidity in the grapes, while long daylight hours give the fruit plenty of chance to ripen. This results in full-bodied Merlot, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon and deeply concentrated Syrah. White wines are just as tantalizing, with toasty oak-touched Chardonnay and ripe stone fruit-flavored Riesling taking the spotlight. Sub-AVAs to look out for are Yakima Valley and Walla Walla. The Columbia Valley is one of the only appellations in the United States to occupy vineyards in two states, as it crosses the Oregon border in the southern part of the valley.
