Contra Costa County
Known locally as "Napa before there was Napa'" due to its pre-Prohibition glory, Contra Costa is famous for its rustic red wines crafted from grapes grown on century-old vines. This AVA sits just across the bay from San Francisco, where afternoon breezes temper the hot climate. The huge shift from hot days to cool nights helps to slow ripening, so the grapes develop juicy, complex flavors without losing their zippy acidity. Here, the main grapes you will find are Zinfandel, Mourvèdre and Carignan, producing bold wines with an earthy, gamey flavor and lots of mouth-filling tannins.

ABOUT THE BRAND:
Ancient Vines by Cline Cellars
FROM THE WINERY: Cline Family Cellars is a family-owned and operated winery in Sonoma, California, built on a passion for winemaking and rooted in respect for the land. Fred Cline started Cline Family Cellars in 1982 in Oakley, California, making his first vintages from original plantings of Mourvèdre, Zinfandel, and Carignane, some of which dated back to the 1880s. In 1989, Fred purchased his horse farm in Carneros and moved the winery to Sonoma County. As one of the original Rhone Rangers, he began planting varietals that included several vineyards dedicated to Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. Since those first plantings, Fred and his wife Nancy have continued to plant vineyards throughout Sonoma County, expanding to include more classic varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Chardonnay.
