ABOUT THIS WINE:

Almaviva

Almaviva

Red Blend

Jointly owned by Bordeaux’s Château Mouton-Rothschild and Chile’s Concha y Toro, Almaviva is an elegant Bordeaux-style red blend. Based on Cabernet Sauvignon, with 24 percent of the distinctive red grape Carmenère in the mix, the 2016 vintage marks the 20th anniversary of this perennial top-scorer. The 150-acre Puente Alto estate lies just south of Chile’s capital of Santiago and is filled with gravels and clays washed down from the towering Andes, which rise to the east; the Carmenère is sourced from the famed Peumo vineyard in the Cachapoal Valley farther south. Winemaker Michel Friou aged the wine 16 months in new French oak, which resulted in a rich red wine full of fruit but also with big structure and texture.

NOTE: This is NOT a Firstleaf Exclusive Wine and is not eligible for discounts, member pricing, or member guarantee. Limited Availability.

WINE REGION:

Outline of Maipo Valley

Maipo Valley

Dubbed the "Bordeaux of South America," Maipo Valley is the beating heart of Chile's wine industry. Lying south of the country's capital, Santiago, but at the northern end of the famous Central Valley, Maipo is famed for its rich red wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon and its lush Bordeaux-style blends featuring Merlot and Carménère too. Maipo Valley enjoys a warm, dry Mediterranean-style climate and is surrounded by mountains with minimal oceanic influence. This helps it produce bold, fruit-forward wines. While these are typically red, some fruity Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are also made here and are well worth exploring.
