WINE REGION:

Outline of Campo de Borja DO

Campo de Borja DO

Located near Spain’s northwest coast, Campo de Borja is famous for developing the art of Spanish winemaking, with monasteries tending vineyards since the 1100s. There are few places on Earth that can produce so wide a range of grape varietals as the Campo de Borja, famed for both red and white wines. Nestled in the Ebro River Valley, white wines such as Viura and Chardonnay that would ordinarily wilt in the region's harsh summers thrive thanks to the cooling winds coming down from the Moncayo mountain range. The DO (Denominación de Origen) category within Spain’s wine classifications is the largest portion within the country’s pyramid of quality. Wines are approved to be at DO status when they meet a handful of standards related to authorized varietals, production size, methods within winemaking and aging restrictions. Additionally, appellations must have been recognized for a minimum of five years in order to be considered to be a DO.
