Most of the world doesn't know much about Balkan wines, but they should. Places like Macedonia (called North Macedonia in the wine world due to and appellation of the same name in Greece), Albania, Croatia, and Montenegro produce some stunning wines international varieties as well as off the radar local grape varieties. While the history of winemaking in the country stretches back into the distant past, Yugoslavia's influence is still keenly felt, and investment into winemaking regions is ongoing.

What are the Most Popular Wine Regions in Macedonia?

Macedonia's wine regions range from Mediterranean to Continental climate zones and can produce wines with defined terroir characteristics. Viticulture in Povardarie (in the Vardar River Valley) and Tikves account for most of the Macedonian wineries and vineyards. The red wine grape Vranec (also spelled Vranac) is the most popular indigenous Balkan grape. It is deeply colored with rich tannin and a penchant for large oak barriques. International grape varieties can also be found, and Macedonian winemakers produce some good Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. White wine varietals like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were once used only for brandy but are now quality wines in their own right. Other indigenous grapes include the Kratosija grape (which is genetically similar to Zinfandel), Smederevka (a white grape), Temjanika (a cousin of Muscat), and Zilavka (another white wine grape). Wine production is still on the rise in the country, and many hectares are being planted around the country. High-quality wine is possible, and with Macedonian wine producers investing in better techniques and equipment, the future is looking bright.
