With each new release, Ten Year Tree continues to offer an impeccable taste of South Africa’s rich winemaking culture. Our 2021 Viognier is fruit forward and lush with floral aromatics and sweet, tropical fruit flavors. While this intensely rich and fruity grape is most commonly associated with France, it has thrived in South African soils since 1989. Swartland offers a comfortable home for this variety, where it thrives among the region’s other top-producing crop, wheat. Our local winemaking partners come from a farming background and have since committed themselves to developing the immense grape-growing potential this region has to offer. The coastal climate provides a much-needed cooling influence to protect Viognier from losing its delicate acidity in warmer temperatures. Swartland is one of South Africa's largest wine regions, famed for its mouthwatering Chenin Blancs, fragrant Syrahs and punchy Pinotage. Forty miles north of Cape Town, Swartland covers a large area from the Atlantic Ocean to the sun-kissed plains of Piketberg. The region has a hot, dry climate away from the cooling ocean, with ancient shale and granite-based soils. This forces the vines to work hard, producing small but concentrated grapes.
