ABOUT THIS WINE:
Primêre Blaar
Vellies Grenache Noir
Beneath the cork of our 2020 Primêre Blaar Grenache, you will discover rich fruit characteristics smoothly integrated with oak. Nicknamed after the shoes—called “vellies”—often worn by the local winemakers, this savor-worthy wine comes from South Africa’s Coastal Region. This region is home to some of the Western Cape’s best vineyards and historic wine-producing areas. To the west, sea breezes from the Atlantic Ocean cool vineyards along the coast, while towering mountains to the east and south block these winds from moving inland, resulting in high temperatures. This diverse offering of climates creates optimal conditions for Grenache to showcase its intense, fruit-forward character. Our local winemaking partners have tended this land since the 1900s and today nurture one of the largest plantings of Grenache in the Western Cape. This harmony of climate, grape variety and expertise is ...

WINE REGION:
Coastal Region
Covering most of the Western Cape, the Coastal Region is the beating heart of South Africa's wine industry. Cooled by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and sheltered by mountains to the south and east, the region enjoys perfect conditions for grapevines to thrive. This is where you will find the world-famous sub-regions of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. Wines labeled as Coastal Region are likely to be made from grapes sourced from a few different sub-zones, taking advantage of a wide range of mesoclimates and soil types. Look out for South Africa's flagship grapes: rounded Chenin Blanc, bold, figgy Pinotage and international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Shiraz too.

TASTING NOTES:
Tobacco
Black Cherry
Mulberry
Oak introduces itself on the nose with savory aromas joined by hints of red fruit and tobacco. Delicate acidity makes our wine’s medium body feel plump and round on the palate with soft tannins that allow rich black cherry and mulberry flavors to shine.
