Bright, fresh, and fruit-forward flavor from the soils of South Africa
ABOUT THIS WINE:
Izak's 177
Chardonnay
Our Izak’s 177 Chardonnay showcases the history and beauty of South African wine. With rich stone fruit notes and creamy textures, this wine offers a beloved, classic style from the New World. Though winemaking in South Africa began in the 1650s, it wasn’t until the 1920s that Chardonnay arrived from France. At first, this usually versatile grape struggled in South Africa’s climate and was cast aside for years. Around 1970, after watching Chardonnay flourish in vineyards worldwide, local winemakers decided to try again. This time, careful consideration of site and clone selection led not only to successful plantings but delicious wines. Today, Chardonnay is planted all over the region and is incredibly prosperous in the Western Cape. Here, warm temperatures and cool breezes encourage optimal ripening. This bottle provides an authentic taste of this popular grape, now thriving in South ...

ABOUT THE BRAND:
Izak's 177
Cape Town native Abraham Izak Perold played a significant role in his country’s rich wine history. After graduating from Victoria College in Stellenbosch, he traveled to Germany to obtain his Ph.D. in Chemistry. Upon graduating, Perold toured Europe, where he became fluent in many languages and familiarized himself with the historic wines of various Old World regions. Not long after his return to Cape Town in 1906, Perold was approached by the South African government; they requested he return to Europe, this time with the task of seeking out new grape varieties that could potentially thrive in South African soils. Perold returned to his home country with 177 varieties. Each of our Izak’s 177 wines is an exquisite local expression of its varietal. Our collection offers a glimpse into the history of South African wine and the boundless potential of Old World grape varieties in this New World wine region.
