What is Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion?
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a small estate in Pessac-Léognan, within the Graves, known for its red Bordeaux blend shaped by gravel soils near Château Haut-Brion.
The estate spans approximately 30 hectares in total (including parks and buildings), but only a portion is planted to vines. The core urban clos for the grand vin covers roughly 7–10 hectares, with additional parcels outside the clos largely used for the second wine. Plantings are mainly Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with a smaller share of Cabernet Sauvignon. This higher proportion of Cabernet Franc is unusual for the Left Bank and helps define its style.
The estate bottles a grand vin under its own name and a second wine, Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion, sourced primarily from separate vineyards in Martillac rather than the main urban clos.
Although unclassified, its wines are often noted for complexity comparable to classified growths. With an annual output limited to tens of thousands of bottles, production remains focused and small in scale.
