Terroir of Vacqueyras

Vacqueyras enjoys a Mediterranean climate with long, hot, dry summers and mild winters, ideal for producing richly flavored wines. The Dentelles de Montmirail mountains shield the vineyards from colder northern winds, while the Mistral wind helps maintain vine health by reducing disease risk. Foothills facing south and southwest provide warm spots with cool nights, preserving grape acidity.

The diverse soils are a mix of poor, rocky types, with alluvial gravels, limestone pebbles, and sandy red sandstone on the lower terraces and mid-slopes. Calcareous clay-marl from the Dentelles adds freshness and minerality. With rainfall mostly in fall and winter and limited irrigation during the growing season, vines develop deep roots. The region's varied microclimates, influenced by elevation and soil differences, contribute to the complexity of Vacqueyras wines, enhancing the flavors of Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Mourvèdre.
