What is Château Calon-Ségur?
Château Calon-Ségur is a producer known for its Grand Vin, a classic red Bordeaux blend.
The estate covers 55 hectares (with roughly 45 to 50 hectares planted) with gravel and clay subsoil, which adds structure and depth. Stone walls surround much of the vineyard, and the best grapes are chosen for the flagship wine.
The blend includes Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Grapes are picked by hand, and the wine ages in French oak barrels, with a proportion of new oak depending on the vintage. The estate also makes Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur, the second wine, and Le C de Calon Ségur, the third wine, offering more accessible takes on the house style.
Signature style: structured and age-worthy, with firm yet refined tannins, deep blackcurrant and plum fruit, and notes of cedar, graphite, and spice that gain complexity with time in bottle.
