What is Château Ausone?
Château Ausone is a historic Saint-Émilion estate that held Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) status from 1955 until its withdrawal from the classification in 2022, known for its limestone slopes, compact vineyard, and focus on Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It covers about 7 hectares and produces roughly 1,500 to 1,800 cases of its Grand Vin each year. The wines are recognized for their concentration, fine structure, and longevity.
The estate also offers a second wine, Chapelle d’Ausone, made from younger vines, which is more approachable earlier on.
Low yields, strict sorting, and limestone bedrock contribute to a style that emphasizes minerality, fragrance, and balance, supporting the estate's reputation for elegant, age-worthy reds.
