The state's American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) encompass a wide array of terroirs, from desert landscapes to fertile hill country. The warm, dry climate is moderated by the influence of the Gulf of Mexico, which sends moist air and occasional cooling breezes inland. This helps to temper the intense daytime heat, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and develop deep, complex flavors. Cooler-climate grape varieties thrive in the higher elevations and northern parts of Texas, while further inland, bigger, bolder wines prevail. This diverse range of conditions enables Texas to produce a wide variety of wine styles, each reflective of its unique growing regions.
