Solano County is California's second-oldest AVA, and wine drinkers have started to take notice of the region's rustic, fruit-forward Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. Located across the bay from San Francisco and just southeast of Napa, Solano has a sleepy, laid-back pace. Cooling breezes from San Pablo Bay and the Suisun Bay create a long season, perfect for growing classic Bordeaux and Rhône grapes. Ripe, plummy Tempranillo and tart cherry flavored Sangiovese also thrive here.
