2002 Burgenland Blaufränkisch

The Hafner Reserve is a remarkable example of Blaufränkisch from the renowned Burgenland region, showcasing the depth and complexity of this varietal. This full-bodied red wine presents a vibrant ruby color that hints at its youthful exuberance despite its age. On the palate, the wine exhibits a delightful balance of medium acidity, enhancing its fruit-forward character, which features prominent notes of dark cherry and ripe plum interwoven with subtle hints of spice and earthiness. The tannins are notably structured, providing a firm backbone that supports the flavors beautifully. Dry yet approachable, this wine is an exceptional choice for those seeking to explore the unique terroir of Burgenland while indulging in a delightful experience that pairs well with rich dishes or can be savored on its own.

Austria

Austria may not be the first country that springs to mind when you think of quality wine, but this slice of central Europe is home to crisp whites and elegant reds that are well worth seeking out. While many classic grapes are grown here, there are exceptional wines made from varieties you rarely see anywhere else, such as white Grüner Veltliner. Spicy and herbaceous, this wine combines notes of white pepper and asparagus with flint and apple. As for reds, the most planted is Zweigelt. This grape is a hybrid of two other local varietals: the spicy Blaufränkisch and light St. Laurent. It combines the best of both worlds with flavors of chocolate, black pepper and fresh raspberry.
